The Cape Flats Safety Forum has urged newly appointed Western Cape police commissioner Sizakele Dyanti to avoid the approach of his predecessor.
The call comes after 11 people were killed in separate incidents across the province over the past weekend.
Forum chairperson Abie Isaacs said the crime crisis requires unconventional policing strategies that are proactive rather than reactive.
On Saturday night, three men were shot dead in Site C in Khayelitsha, while in Langa, four men and a woman were killed in a separate shooting.
In the early hours of Sunday morning, two men and a woman were also shot dead in the Barcelona informal settlement in Gugulethu.
Isaacs said that there’s an urgent need for improved intelligence.
He said, “We’ve got a chopper that needs to be utilised. Although it’s 70,000, 80,000 Rands per hour, utilise those choppers. Integrate that with your military intelligence that are there, because I believe that the militaries here, the South African Defence Force, they also have an intelligence capacity.”
