WEATHER: Rain and freezing conditions set to slam parts of South Africa

Here’s the weather outlook for South Africa’s nine provinces.

The South African Weather Service has issued weather updates stating that disruptive rain, snow and winds are expected in some provinces.

SEVERE WEATHER ALERTS

IMPACT-BASED WARNINGS

A. Orange Level 6 Warning: Disruptive rain resulting in flooding of bridges/roads/settlements and damage to property/infrastructure is expected in places along the coast and adjacent interior between East London (Eastern Cape) and Cape Vidal (KwaZulu-Natal).

B. Orange Level 5 Warning: Disruptive snow resulting in traffic disruptions, disruption to essential services and some communities temporarily cut-off is expected in places over the extreme north-eastern high-ground of the Eastern Cape.

C. Yellow Level 2 Warning: Disruptive snow resulting in traffic disruptions, disruption to essential services and some communities temporarily cut-off is expected in places over the north-eastern high-ground of the Eastern Cape and Drakensberg area of KwaZulu-Natal.

D. Yellow Level 2 Warning: Disruptive rain resulting in flooding of bridges/roads/settlements and damage to property/infrastructure is expected over the south- eastern parts of the Eastern Cape and the eastern parts of KwaZulu-Natal, except in the extreme north- east.

Very cold and wet conditions with light snowfall expected to set in from Wednesday (29-07-2026) evening in places over the Eastern Cape, southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal, southern Free State as well as along the Lesotho border with the passage of the cut-off-low weather system, clearing from the west by Thursday (30-07-2026). Farmers are advised to take precautionary measures to mitigate negative impact under such adverse weather conditions.

Gauteng

Gauteng can expect partly cloudy and cool to cold with isolated showers and rain.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index is Moderate

Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga, the Place of the Rising Sun, can expect drizzle along the escarpment, otherwise partly cloudy and cool with isolated showers and rain. It will be cloudy in the morning.

Limpopo

In Limpopo, drizzle along the escarpment, otherwise partly cloudy and cool with isolated showers in the south-east. It will be cloudy in the east at first.

North West

North West, known as Bokone Bophirima in Setswana, can expect partly cloudy and cool with isolated showers and thundershowers in the extreme south-east.

Free State

In the Free State, partly cloudy and cold to cool with isolated showers and thundershowers but scattered along the Lesotho boarder. Light snowfall is possible along the Lesotho boarder and in the extreme south-west.

Northern Cape

Fine to partly cloudy and cold to cool but very cold over the southern parts with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers in the south-east. Light snowfall is possible in the extreme south-east. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong southerly to south-easterly.

Western Cape

Partly cloudy to cloudy in the east, otherwise fine and cool to warm but cold in parts of the Central Karoo. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong easterly to south-easterly.

The expected UVB sunburn index is Very High

Eastern Cape

The Western half: Cool in places along the coast, otherwise cloudy and cold with isolated showers and rain, clearing up in the afternoon. Snowfalls are expected in the high-lying areas. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh easterly.

The Eastern half: Cloudy and cold to very cold with scattered showers and rain, but widespread south of escarpment. Snowfalls are expected over high-lying areas. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh southeasterly.

KwaZulu-Natal

Cloudy and cold to cool with scattered showers and rain, but isolated in the extreme north-east. The wind along the coast will be southerly to south-easterly.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index is Low
