Police in Limpopo said it is closely monitoring the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) voter registration after one person was arrested for vandalism.
South Africans have been urged to register to vote for the upcoming 2026 Local Government Elections taking place on November 4.
Police said their members have been deployed on the ground, and additional resources have been made available across the province to safeguard voter registration stations and other critical areas.
“A strategic operational plan has been developed to address potential threats, with a specific focus on preventing and swiftly responding to any incidents of violence or unrest during the voter registration period,” police said.
SAPS management has been engaging with community leaders, civil society organisations, and Community Policing Forums to promote cooperation and ensure a peaceful voter registration weekend.
However, a suspect was arrested by members attached to the Rakgoadi police station for vandalising IEC branding materials in the form of banners and teardrops.
“The suspect allegedly committed the offence on Saturday morning and fled the scene. Police worked tirelessly and arrested the suspect later in the evening,” police said.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Sekhukhune Magistrate’s Court, facing charges relating to malicious damage to property and contravention of electoral laws.
