The Western Cape Government has confirmed the death of one person due to adverse weather conditions in the Central Karoo and Garden Route districts.
While the weather seems to be stabilising after days of heavy rainfall, residents in the area have been urged to remain cautious, as large volumes of water continue to move through river systems across the province.
The MEC for Local Government, Environmental Affairs, and Development Planning, Anton Bredell, confirmed the death of one individual.
“One fatality has been confirmed in the Garden Route after an individual attempted to cross a flooded river. Authorities have again appealed to residents not to cross flooded rivers or roads, warning that these conditions remain extremely dangerous,” Bredell said.
At a briefing at the Joint Operations Centre (JOC) on Friday, officials confirmed that the worst of the weather system has passed, with conditions clearing across most affected regions. Current forecasts indicate a return to more typical winter rainfall patterns over the coming days and weeks.
Despite the improving weather, significant volumes of water remain in dams and river systems, particularly in the Garden Route and Central Karoo. Several dams remain above capacity and continue to release water downstream, increasing the risk of flooding in low-lying areas.
Emergency services remain fully activated across the province. Humanitarian assistance, including food, water, and shelter, is being provided to affected communities.
Bredell said Infrastructure teams continue to restore access to areas that were temporarily cut off, while the electricity supply has been stabilised in previously affected areas.
The Western Cape Government also reiterated that public communication efforts remain ongoing across multiple platforms to ensure communities receive timely and accurate safety information.
Residents are urged to:
- Avoid crossing flooded rivers or roads.
- Follow official updates and advisories.
- Remain alert as conditions continue to evolve.
- Report emergencies to local authorities.
“The immediate threat from the weather system has eased, but the dangers associated with
swollen rivers and high dam levels remain. We urge all residents to remain vigilant and to heed official warnings and safety advice,” Bredell said.
