More than 1 000 arrested in Mpumalanga during weekend Operation Shanela crackdown

Police in Mpumalanga arrested 1 175 suspects during a province-wide operation carried out this weekend.

The arrests were made as part of #OperationShanela2, with officers also recovering 28 unlicensed firearms and 58 rounds of ammunition over the three-day period, April 17-19.

Among those arrested, 146 suspects were taken into custody for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, while 59 were arrested by detectives during the tracing of #wanted suspects.

Police also arrested 135 suspects for illegal dealing in liquor.

In addition, counterfeit goods with an estimated value of R283 000 were confiscated, and 24 vehicles suspected to be stolen or hijacked were recovered at roadblocks and through intelligence-driven operations.

Other suspects were arrested during stop-and-search operations conducted across the province.

The arrested suspects are expected to appear in various magistrates’ courts in Mpumalanga on Monday, April 20, while others were released after paying admission of guilt fines.
