A student at the University of the Free State (UFS) has died at the Bloemfontein Campus on the same day they were due to graduate, the institution confirmed on Friday.
In a statement, the university said the incident occurred on the afternoon of April 17, 2026, just before the scheduled graduation ceremony.
“It is with deep sadness that the University of the Free State (UFS) shares the news of the passing of one of our students at the Bloemfontein Campus on the afternoon of April 17, 2026,” the university said.
The university confirmed the student was expected to graduate later that day.
“The student was scheduled to graduate on the afternoon of April 17, but died on campus before the ceremony,” UFS said.
The cause of death has not yet been determined.
“The cause of death is not known at this stage,” the university added.
UFS extended its condolences to the bereaved families and the wider student community and said support structures had been activated.
“The university extends its sincere condolences to the student’s family, friends and fellow students. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time and we wish them strength in coping with this loss.”
University officials have not released any further details and the case remains under investigation.
