Western Cape Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku said that he fully supports government’s plans for a strict zero-percent alcohol limit for drivers.
He was speaking at the launch of the province’s Easter road safety campaign in Khayelitsha on Friday.
Twenty-two people lost their lives on Western Cape roads during last year’s Easter period, with pedestrians accounting for 18 of those fatalities.
Khayelitsha has been identified as one of the areas with the highest number of pedestrian deaths.
Sileku said that alcohol remains a major contributing factor to road accidents, involving both drivers and pedestrians.
“We are also grateful to the minister that she wants to bring the blood-alcohol limit for all drivers to zero percent. We are also encouraged by what we are doing; once people are found to be under the influence, they will be arrested and taken to the cells.”
