Three Mpumalanga handball players have been selected to represent South Africa at the International Handball Federation (IHF) Zone six Tournament in Zambia from April 28 to May 7.
Luthando Khumalo (U17) and Junior Mahlangu (U17) from Sukuyende Handball Club in Bethal, and Vuyo Nyalunga (U20) from Whitehazy Handball Club in Hazyview have been called up to represent Mzansi.
Their coaches expressed gratitude to the players’ families for allowing them to participate in the championship and encouraged more young people to join the sport as preparations begin for the next female championship.

The opportunity comes after teams participated in the South African Handball Championships held in the Free State from March 6 to 8.
In 2025, Lusanda Dhlamini (17) and Lusanda Zulu (16), flew the country’s flag in Zimbabwe for the international competition. They played for the U18 Handball SA team that claimed a bronze medal.
Handball clubs are preparing to gather for exhibition matches in Mbombela as part of efforts to grow the sport in Mpumalanga. Coach Ignitius Masuku said the initiative aims to empower young people and provide positive opportunities through sport participation.

“I’m willing to assist the youth to form teams, especially those from Barberton. This is a way to keep them away from crime and drug abuse,” said Masuku.
