ANC verbijsterd door IFP in KZN, EFF in Noordwest

Ward 13 in uMhlatuze, KwaZulu-Natal, saw the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) emerge victorious with 53%, significantly overturning the African National Congress’s (ANC) previous dominance. The ANC’s support plummeted from 63% to 46%, while the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) also saw a decline from 10% to a mere 1%. This ward is crucial as it includes key areas such as Richards Bay and Empangeni. The IFP’s rise allowed them to clinch the mayoral chain, supported by the Democratic Alliance (DA), Freedom Front Plus (FF+), and African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), garnering 40 out of 67 council seats. This shift occurred after ANC councilor Lindokuhle Ndlovu resigned following a near-fatal attack. Meanwhile, in Ward 3, Maquassi Hills, North West, the EFF unseated the ANC with 47% of the votes, with the ANC falling from 63% to 44%. These results indicate a significant shift in voter sentiment and political power dynamics in these regions.
