Today’s weather: Extremely high fire danger in Northern Cape as heatwave grips parts of Eastern Cape

The South African Weather Service has warned that extremely high veld fire conditions are expected over most parts of the Northern Cape.

The forecaster warned that communities can expect hot conditions across much of the country, with extremely high veld fire danger in parts of the Northern Cape and a heatwave warning remaining in place for parts of the Eastern Cape.

A heatwave, characterised by persistently high temperatures, is also expected in places over the Chris Hani and Alfred Nzo district municipalities in the Eastern Cape until Sunday, November 1.

While much of the country will experience fine and hot weather, isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers are forecast in parts of Mpumalanga, the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal.

What to expect

Gauteng: Fine and hot

Gauteng will experience fine and warm to hot conditions, becoming partly cloudy during the afternoon.

Residents are advised to take precautions against sun exposure, as the expected UVB sunburn index is high.

Mpumalanga: Morning fog and afternoon storms

Morning fog is expected over parts of Mpumalanga, followed by afternoon showers and thundershowers along the escarpment and eastern Highveld.

Elsewhere, conditions will be fine and cool to warm, becoming partly cloudy during the afternoon, except in the Lowveld.

Motorists travelling through fog-prone areas should remain alert to potentially reduced visibility.

Limpopo: Warm to hot

Limpopo will experience fine and warm to hot weather, with partly cloudy conditions expected over the central parts of the province during the afternoon.

North West: Hot weather expected

Fine and hot conditions are forecast across North West, becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon.

Free State: Isolated afternoon thunderstorms

The Free State will experience fine and hot conditions, becoming partly cloudy, with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers expected in the eastern parts of the province.

Northern Cape: Extreme veld fire danger

The Northern Cape faces a significant fire-weather concern, with extremely high veld fire conditions expected over most parts of the province.

Conditions will be cloudy with mist along the western parts, while the remainder of the province will experience fine and hot to very hot weather. The eastern parts will become partly cloudy in the afternoon, while the north-western areas will be warm.

Along the coast, moderate southerly winds are expected, becoming fresh at times during the afternoon.

Residents, farmers and outdoor workers should exercise caution in areas at risk of veld fires and avoid activities that could cause accidental fires.

Western Cape: Very hot Central Karoo

The Western Cape will experience fine and hot conditions, with partly cloudy weather expected along the southern parts.

Very hot conditions are forecast over the Central Karoo.

Along the south-western coast, moderate to fresh southerly winds are expected. The southern coastal areas will experience easterly to south-easterly winds.

The expected UVB sunburn index is very high, making sun protection important for people spending time outdoors.

Eastern Cape: Heatwave warning and coastal fog

The Eastern Cape will experience warm to hot conditions, with morning and evening fog expected in places near the coast.

In the western half of the province, conditions will be fine to partly cloudy and warm to hot, although some coastal areas will be warm to cool.

Moderate to fresh easterly to north-easterly winds are expected along the coast.

The eastern half will also experience fine to partly cloudy and warm to hot weather, with morning and evening fog in places near the coast. Moderate to fresh easterly to north-easterly winds are forecast along the coast, initially light to moderate.

The heatwave advisory remains in place for places in the Chris Hani and Alfred Nzo district municipalities until Sunday, November 1.

Residents in affected areas should take precautions against prolonged heat exposure, particularly during the hottest parts of the day.

KwaZulu-Natal: Warm with isolated thunderstorms

KwaZulu-Natal will experience morning fog in places over the interior, followed by fine to partly cloudy and warm conditions.

Isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers are expected in the extreme western parts of the province.

Along the coast, light to moderate north-easterly winds are forecast, becoming fresh from late morning.

The expected UVB sunburn index is very high, and residents and visitors are advised to use sun protection when outdoors.

Weather warnings and safety advice

The main weather concerns are the extremely high veld fire danger across most of the Northern Cape and the heatwave affecting parts of the Eastern Cape.

Residents should:

  • Avoid activities that could start veld fires, particularly in dry and fire-prone areas.

  • Drink water regularly and limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.

  • Use sunscreen, protective clothing and shade, especially in areas where the UVB sunburn index is high or very high.

  • Take care when driving through areas affected by morning or evening fog.

  • Monitor official weather updates for changes to warnings and advisories.

SAWS said hot weather will dominate much of the country, while isolated afternoon thunderstorms are expected in parts of Mpumalanga, the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal. The Northern Cape faces the greatest veld fire risk, while parts of the Eastern Cape remain under a heatwave advisory until Sunday.
