However, Winde hit back, arguing that the City of Cape Town has built more affordable housing than other metros in the country.
“While we cannot ignore our challenges around housing, we must also acknowledge that our situation is a consequence of this government’s success in making the Western Cape the best-run province in the nation.”
The African National Congress (ANC)’s Nomi Nkondlo questioned Winde on what the Democratic Alliance (DA) has done to disrupt apartheid spatial planning.
“To date, there’s little much to be said about that. That legacy, premier, that you are referring to, remains visible across Cape Town and the province. People live on the outskirts of the city are far from jobs, schools, healthcare and economic opportunity.”
Winde suggested the province needs to rethink its entire housing model to deal with the challenge.
