Western Cape police probe four murders after charred bodies found in Du Noon

Police in the Western Cape are appealing for public assistance after four charred bodies were found in Du Noon on Sunday.  

The bodies were discovered metres apart on an open field. 

The provincial police spokesperson, Sergeant Wesley Twigg, confirmed the discovery. 

“Police reports indicate that Milnerton police were called out to the N7 off-ramp on Malibongwe Drive, where they discovered burnt remains of the deceased persons on an open field adjacent to the road,” Twigg said. 

Mob justice

The bodies were burnt beyond recognition. 

“Determinations were made based on the crime scene that tyres were used to set the victims alight. The circumstances surrounding the crime incident remain unclear, and the motive is yet to be determined,” Twigg said. 

Police are investigating four counts of murder. 

“A murder docket was opened for investigation by Serious Violent Crime Unit detectives,” Twigg said. 

Police urge anyone with information that could assist the investigation to contact Crime Stop 08600 10111. 

While residents remain tight-lipped on the issue, reports claim the victims were killed in a mob justice incident. The four men were alleged to be robbers. 

Separate incidents

In an unrelated incident, a suspect was arrested in Ravensmead for the illegal possession of ammunition on Friday, August 21. 

“Members of Operation Lockdown III followed up on information about a suspect who is in possession of ammunition. A description of the suspect was given, and the suspect was apprehended. He was searched and was found in possession of 12 rounds of ammunition. He was detained for the illegal possession of ammunition,” Twigg said. 

The 18-year-old will appear in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court once charged.

In Manenberg, a 20-year-old man was arrested for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. 

“Operation Lockdown III members deployed in Manenberg were conducting stop and search operations when they noticed two males walking in the road who acted suspiciously when they saw the police vehicles,” Twigg said. 

The duo tried evading police but were apprehended and searched. 

“One male was found in possession of a 9mm pistol and 31 rounds of ammunition and was subsequently arrested for the possession thereof,” Twigg said. 

The suspect will appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court once charged.
