WC govt says water security is an urgent matter

The Western Cape government says it is approaching water resilience with the same urgency as energy security.

At a meeting of the Western Cape Integrated Energy and Water Council on Friday, Energy Adviser Alwie Lester announced plans to add 1800 megawatts of capacity in the next financial year.

The council also reviewed the province’s Water Resilience Strategy, launched in October 2025.  

The Premier’s spokesperson Regan Thaw says the Department of Agriculture is leading two projects to clear invasive alien plants, which consume large volumes of water.

“A key component of the strategy includes the removal of invasive alien plant species in the Western Cape’s waterways. In this regard, currently two projects are underway, valued at more than 3 million rand, which is being led by the Western Cape Department of Agriculture.”
