Limpopo has new Police Commissioner in Jan Scheepers

Limpopo has a new top cop, with Jan Scheepers officially appointed as the province’s Police Commissioner.

Scheepers has been acting in the role since May, following the retirement of the former commissioner, Thembi Hadebe.

His appointment was announced during a media briefing on Friday.

Scheepers began his career in the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) before joining the South African Police Service (SAPS), where he rose through the ranks to serve in several senior leadership positions.

Acting National Police Commissioner Puleng Dimpane said Scheepers’ appointment follows his successful stint as acting provincial commissioner.

“It, therefore, gives me great pleasure to announce the appointment of the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Jan Petrus Scheepers.”

In his acceptance speech, Scheepers pledged to strengthen the fight against crime, saying police would need the support of communities to succeed.

“To the community out there, I’d like to ask you, ‘Re tshepeng’ – trust us. We are going to change this province, but we cannot do it alone.”

Scheepers will officially assume his new role as Limpopo’s provincial police commissioner on Saturday, 1 August 2026.
