Police have opened an inquest following a tragic house fire in Fisantekraal in the Western Cape that claimed the lives of two young children in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The fire broke out at a property in Kameeldrift Street, Greenville. After Fire and Rescue Services extinguished the blaze, the bodies of two children, aged four and 11, were discovered among the debris.
“Durbanville police registered an inquest for investigation following a fire,” police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said.
He added that the circumstances surrounding the tragedy remain under investigation.
Twigg said: “The bodies of two children four and eleven years old were discovered amongst the debris after Fire and Rescue Services extinguished the fire. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.”
Police have not yet disclosed the identities of the children, and no further details have been released about the occupants of the property or how the fire started.
Investigators are working to establish the cause of the blaze, while forensic and fire experts are expected to form part of the ongoing inquiry.
Authorities have appealed to anyone who may have information that could assist the investigation to come forward and contact the police. The investigation is continuing.
