The Gauteng government said it will engage the City of Johannesburg on the possibility of integrating 41 ambulances bought by the metro into the provincial emergency medical services (EMS) system.
In a statement, the province clarified it had no involvement in the procurement of the vehicles six years ago and noted they have remained unused since then.
Provincial government spokesperson Sizwe Pamla said the province is also reviewing the city’s application to operate an emergency response service from six stations.
He added, however, that the provincial government has full responsibility for ambulance services since taking over the function from municipalities in 2009.

“This was done in order to guarantee uniform emergency care that meets national standards. The province is planning to engage with the City of Johannesburg about what to do with the vehicles, including possibly bringing them into the provincial system.”
