Water and sanitation department reports sustained gains across Western Cape dams

The Department of Water and Sanitation said that dam levels in the Western Cape continue to improve.

The City of Cape Town’s dams are just over 83%.

That’s up from nearly 78% last week.

Several catchment areas across the province are also showing improvements, with most dams in the Gouritz and Olifants-Doorn catchments above 100% capacity.

New data from the Water and Sanitation Department shows dam levels in the Western Cape have increased from 79.2% to 79.4%.

Theewaterskloof Dam, the largest in Cape Town’s water supply system, increased from 77% to 78%.

Clanwilliam Dam near the Cederberg is now 96% full, which is a 2 percent increase from last week.

Steenbras Upper Dam, Wemmershoek Dam near Paarl, and dams in the Gouritz and Olifants-Doorn catchments are all at or above 100%.

In the Garden Route, the Akkerkloof Dam in Knysna has improved to 48% capacity after the town declared a state of disaster in January when levels dropped to 15%.

Western Cape Provincial Head-Ntombizanele Bila-Mupariwa-says the continued improvement in dam levels is encouraging for water security in the province, but residents are still urged to use water responsibly.
