Six foreigner nationals were killed when a fire gutted their shop in the Tsomo CBD, Eastern Cape, on Tuesday.
According to police, seven of them were asleep inside the shop when the fire broke out.
One person was rescued by a private security company, together with Tsomo SA Police Service members, who broke through the burglar-proofed door of the room where he was sleeping.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said five charred bodies had been recovered so far, with one still outstanding.
“Members of the Local Criminal Record Centre are also en route to the scene,” she said.
“Firefighters and Emergency Medical Services are on site. Smoke from the building remains visible.”

Gantana said no foul play was suspected at this stage.
“Police are currently attending to the scene,” she said.
