The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has warned motorists of icy conditions and flooding on the roads as severe weather hits parts of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.
The SA Weather Service reported that disruptive rain and snow hit the provinces on Wednesday.
RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane explained that the authorities have closed some roads and issued travel advisories, urging people to avoid unnecessary journeys.
Motorists are being warned not to take chances on the icy roads, as driving around road closures or underestimating the conditions could have devastating consequences.
He called on motorists to reconsider their journeys if not necessary.
“This situation is extremely dangerous at the moment for vehicles because of the snow. The snow makes the roads slippery in some areas, especially the mountain passes; visibility becomes extremely compromised as well.
“We have the post this morning that the routes to Underberg are seriously affected. We know that driving past the Van Reenan’s would be a challenge as well… Little Switzerland would also be another challenge. If you’re going to Durban, the Eastern Cape, the mountain passes around the R61 would also be affected.”
The Border Management Authority has also temporarily suspended operations at the Qacha’s Nek Port of Entry near Matatiele due to the severe weather.
For those who must travel to the affected areas, Zwane recommended driving slowly, having your headlights on, increasing the following distance, and avoiding flooded bridges.
He also stressed the importance of obeying instructions from traffic law enforcement officers, who are out on the roads to assist.

He advised motorists to remain on the main roads, use their apps such as Waze and N3TC social media pages, and listen to radio stations for instructions on which areas are most affected.
“So, it’s time to really drive very cautiously and increase the following distances between vehicles for the coming days and until it’s totally clear and your visibility is clear and you are able to see all conditions on the road.”
