Gauteng’s Department of Education (GDE) has confirmed that it will take over operations of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy.
The school in Mayerton was established in 2007 and teaches grades 8 to 12 under the Independent Examinations Board (IEB), offering specialised emotional training alongside academics.
More than 1,000 girls have matriculated and found opportunities beyond South Africa’s borders since it was established.
GDE spokesperson Onwabile Lubhelwana said the official handover of operations will happen at the end of 2027.
“The MEC confirms that the administrative processes for the academy’s full transfer to the GDE are underway, with the full takeover expected at the end of the 2027 academic year. The MEC can further confirm that this transition will preserve the academy’s legacy of academic excellence.”
