Eastern Cape police detain undocumented foreign nationals

The operation formed part of the nationwide June 30 Operational Deployment, ahead of Tuesday’s anticipated protests against illegal immigration.

Eastern Cape police have identified 14 priority areas across the province where demonstrations are expected.

Eastern Cape police said officers conducted inspections at businesses, public places, and residential properties in Cradock on Sunday.

A further 17 foreign nationals were fined a combined R21,000 for expired permits.

Police Spokesperson Yolisa Mgolodela said that four suspects were also arrested for breaking into a shop owned by a foreign national.

“During business inspections in Michausdal, Nxuba, an Ethiopian shop owner fled and locked his premises upon seeing the police approach. Seizing the opportunity, four suspects, aged between 33 and 55, broke into the shop and stole various items.”

Police said that they remain optimistic that the operation will continue to yield positive results as deployments continue across the province.
