Western Cape Government tells protesters it cannot remove foreign nationals from jobs

Protesters made their way back to the Grand Parade after being told by Malila that the provincial government lacked the authority to inspect businesses or remove foreign national employees to replace them with South African workers.

“Matters related to employment contracts, deductions and compliance with labour legislation falls under the justification of the national department of employment and labour and the CCMA in terms of national law. We therefore encourage LACO to engage these institutions directly as they have the legal authority to investigate and enforce.”

As the demonstrators passed St. George’s Cathedral, a silent vigil was underway, hosted by St. George’s Cathedral, Groote Kerk, and the Central Methodist Church.

A group of demonstrators stood outside the cathedral holding placards reading “No to Xenophobia” and “No to Afrophobia”, calling on South Africans to extend Ubuntu to everyone.
