Gauteng Health defends handling of Steve Biko hospital nurse after bullying claims

Gauteng’s Department of Health has defended its handling of a Steve Biko Academic Hospital nurse after a video alleging bullying by hospital management spread on social media.

The professional nurse from the hospital’s nephrology department claims she has been bullied following her suspension.

Health officials said the employee was suspended in December 2025 over alleged non-compliance with hospital policy related to prolonged sick leave and medical assessments.

The department said the employee has been absent from work since October 2025 and claims several requests for required documentation were met with resistance.

Gauteng Health said the employee’s salary was subsequently frozen after she failed to submit the necessary leave and incapacity forms.

“The department remains committed to engaging their employee and implores her to comply with the necessary policy and procedure. The department and the hospital will be reincorporating the employee upon compliance with necessary policy,” said spokesperson Steve Mabona.

The department has also called for staff to use internal channels to raise grievances.
