Fire at Free State Medical Storage Facility investigated

De Brand broke out on Monday evening (19/5) in the Supply Chain Management Stores department in the Kopano District Health Office.

The destroyed medical supplies, essential dental equipment and materials that are vital for oral healthcare services in the district that were housed at the department.

“The cause of the fire is currently being investigated and the full extent of the damage has yet to be assessed,” said Spokesperson Mondli Mvambi of the Leef State Health.

“The adjacent store, with the supplies for stationery, has only sustained water damage, we are relieved to report that no injuries have occurred as a result of this unfortunate event.”

He promised further updates as more information became available. “We work diligently to tackle the aftermath of this incident.”

In the meantime, contractors were expected to attend the National District Hospital in Bloemfontein, which was closed for ten months after the fire destroyed one of the departments of the hospital and led to the evacuation of 83 patients.

There were no fatalities or injuries of the fire, but the aftermath left a long -term impact on the delivery of health care and personnel activities in the free state.

The closure of the National District Hospital has caused a significant influx of patients to the Pelonomi Hospital, which was already working under tension.

“The upgrade and repair work of the burnt departments in the National District Hospital were subject to a public tendering process, which is now in the assessment phase,” said Mvambi.

“It is expected that the contractors will be on site from May 2025. The services made since the fire contain victims. There are certain services that have been fully restored to the hospital after last year’s fire.”

Bloemfontein Courant reports that the services that have been fully restored are the pharmacy, outpatient department, medical department, X -ray, pregnancy department and a high risk pregnancy clinic, clinic for pediatric day, termination of the pregnancy clinic, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, dietitians and social workers.
