Since 1994, ANC’s support in the Eastern Cape has seen a significant decline. In 2014, the party held a robust 79.27% of votes, but this dropped to 68.74% in 2019, and further dwindled to 62% in the latest elections. Despite this drop, the Eastern Cape remains a stronghold for the ANC due to its historical connection to prominent political figures like the Mbekis and Sisulus. Other parties have seen growth; the DA increased its share from 7.34% in 2004 to 14.27% recently, while the EFF’s support jumped from 3.48% in 2014 to 10.11%. The newcomer MKP recorded 1.47%. ANC spokesperson Loyiso Magqashela expressed mixed feelings, acknowledging the losses but emphasizing ongoing public support. Meanwhile, DA leader Andrew Whitfield lauded his party’s inroads, despite criticizing the Electoral Commission’s inefficiencies.
