TEN people have lost their lives in a bus accident. 

According to the Department of Transport and Community Safety in Limpopo, the accident occurred at 3 Miles, on the N1 around Makhado on Tuesday,27 August.

The bus is said to have been en-route from Joburg to Zimbabwe when the accident happened.

Five women and five men, reportedly foreign nationals, have died. Reports suggest that the bus drove over a roundabout (the last traffic circle from Makhado towards Polokwane) at high speed, lost control, and overturned, killing and injuring its passengers in the process.

The bus driver is allegedly new in his job and not familiar with the surroundings.

Connie Tshidza (44) said she only saw the accident in the morning on her way to work.

“I was shocked to see a bus that has overturned. There were no people in it when I was passing by. I work in Louis Trichardt, so I travel every day from Polokwane to Makhado. I’m really shocked because this is not the first time something like this happens,” she said.

MEC for Transport and Community Safety Violet Mathye has sent messages of condolences to the families of the deceased.

Department of Transport spokesperman Phuthi Lekganyane said the MEC will be visiting the accident scene.

“At this point, there are no latest developments on the story; however, the MEC will be visiting the accident scene on Wednesday, 28 August,” Lekganyane said.
