JOHANNESBURG – The rot at Thembisa Hospital seems to continue unabated.

The Special Investigating Unit says its probe has revealed a further 5,500 fraudulent transactions amounting to as much as R3bn.

This as the country marked the third anniversary of the death of whistleblower, Babita Deokaran.

She died in a hail of bullets outside her home a mere three weeks after she flagged fraudulent transactions amounting to R850m at Thembisa Hospital.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi and SIU head, Advocate Andy Mothibi, are set to brief the media in Pretoria on Saturday.

The preliminary findings are expected to shed some light on the extent of alleged corruption, fraud and maladministration in the healthcare sector.

A rise in medico-legal claims prompted President Cyril Ramaphosa to ask the SIU to investigate.
