Eskom removes 35 illegal transformers in Soweto

Eskom and several law enforcement agencies conducted the operation on Tuesday.

In a statement released by the utility on Wednesday, it said the removal of illegal connections would help alleviate the strain on the grid.

“These illegal practices compromise Eskom’s financial health and its ability to deliver a dependable electricity supply to legitimate customers.

“Illegally connected transformers not only destabilise the network, causing frequent supply interruptions, extended outages and substandard service for paying customers but also pose significant safety risks to Eskom technicians working on the system,” the utility said.

The utility is also probing the possible involvement of its staff in setting up the illegal connections.

“We maintain a clear stance of zero tolerance towards crime and corruption. Consequently, we are currently investigating allegations from community leaders that some Eskom employees are allegedly involved in the sale of illegal transformers.”
