On Thursday, August 15, a TAXI owner was shot dead.

This was confirmed by the QwaQwa United Taxi Association (Qwauta) in Phuthaditjhaba, Free State, that the dead man was a taxi driver.

Qwauta Chairman Matshediso Nteo said this Daily sun The deceased was also a minister.

“We can confirm that the deceased is a member of our group. His brutal murder has shocked us. We do not know what caused the attack. We will rely on police investigations. However, we cannot rule out that his death is related to taxi violence.

“He is the fourth member of our organization to be murdered in such a brutal manner. We fear for our lives. We wonder who will be next; this is a bloodbath. This taxi violence will not get us anywhere. We need to debate and find solutions to end our differences. We call on the police to bring these heartless perpetrators to justice,” she said.

According to a witness, the dead man was sitting in the driving school car when two unknown men approached him, pretending to ask about the prices of the driving lessons. One of them allegedly fired a gun and shot him multiple times before fleeing the scene in a Toyota Yaris.

“The deceased would park his car outside the driving school premises and then go for lunch with other taxi drivers. The driving school is closer to the taxi rank, so most taxi drivers would gather there daily. We were shocked when we heard multiple gunshots. This is very threatening to us as community members,” said a 42-year-old resident.

Police spokesman Mmako Mophiring said a manhunt has been launched to find the perpetrators.

“Taxi violence is a serious problem in this area. We have many cases of taxi violence and most of them are being investigated,” he said.

Mophiring said a murder case has been registered at Phuthaditjhaba police station. The family of the deceased taxi driver requested privacy to grieve.
