Johannesburg Finance MMC Dada Morero has been nominated as mayor by the Gauteng ANC.

He is the only candidate put forward by the party and will likely become the next mayor of the embattled City of Johannesburg.

In a press briefing on Tuesday, ANC regional leaders said Morero had been the cornerstone during the tenure of the current mayor, Kabelo Gwamanda.

The leading coalition, the government of local unity, which includes the ANC, EFF, PA and minority parties, has 145 councillors – a majority in the 270-member council.

And that is without the votes of 44 councillors which ActionSA promised the ANC – on condition that Gwamanda steps down.

As long as the coalition stays strong, Morero is sure to take the mayoral chain on Friday, when the special sitting is set to take place.

Morero was previously in the seat, when the DA’s Mpho Phalatse was voted out in a motion of no confidence in September 2022.

Morero replaced Phalatse for 25 days until the court ruled that she had been illegally removed.

Phalatse was reinstated in October 2022, but was removed in another motion of no confidence in January 2023.

The new mayor, Gwamanda, of the Al Jama-ah party, was a compromise between the ANC and the EFF, as both wanted the position.

Gwamanda handed in his resignation letter earlier on Tuesday.

The mayor said he would step down at a time announced by the speaker, Margaret Arnolds.
