JUST IN: Pupil among three dead in horror crash  | Daily Sun


The horrific crash, which claimed three lives in Mpumalanga.

THREE people, including a pupil, have been killed in a collision involving a scholar bus, truck, and bakkie in Mpumalanga.

The accident happened on the D2296 road between Karino and Mbombela on Monday morning, 12 August.

According to Mpumalanga Community Safety spokesman Moeti Mmusi, the bus was transporting pupils to various schools in Mbombela.

“The deceased are the driver and passenger of the bakkie and one pupil who was an occupant in the bus,” Mmusi said.

He said 27 people sustained injuries ranging from slight to serious. They were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Mmusi said although the cause of the crash is yet to be established, it’s suspected that unsafe overtaking might have been the cause.

Mpumalanga Community Safety MEC, Jackie Macie has since raised concern about the number of crashes involving school kids lately. He said this is an indication that there’s a problem that needs to be urgently dealt with.

“We can’t continue losing young innocent people on our roads due to recklessness. This must come to an end,” Macie said.

This is the seventh pupil to die in a car accident in the province following the bus-goods train accident that occurred last Thursday, 31 July on the R104 road in Mafube Village between Wonderfontein and Arnot.

Pupils from Morelig Combined School were laid to rest on Saturday, 10 August in different places across the province.
