SATAWU calls for thorough probe into fatal Mpumalanga scholar transport crash

JOHANNESBURG – The South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (SATAWU) is calling for a thorough investigation into a scholar bus crash that claimed the lives of six children in Mpumalanga.

It’s understood the bus they were travelling in from school collided with a train in Middelburg on Wednesday.

Eyewitnesses said the bus crossed the railway line while the goods train was approaching.

The driver of the bus has been discharged from hospital after receiving treatment for his injuries.

SATAWU said that from the information available it seems the driver took a reckless and uncalculated risk.

“The South African Transport and Allied Workers Union once again calls on all drivers to be extra cautious on the road,” said spokesperson Amanda Tshemese.

“We wish the injured victims a speedy recovery and we are sending our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. They are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
