Deputy Transport Minister calls for coherence on road safety policies

Deputy Minister of Transport Mkhuleko Hlengwa says the Road Traffic Management Corporation will provide them with a preliminary report into the deadly R104 road accident in the Middelburg area, which will then guide them on steps that should be taken.

Six learners from Morélig Primary School died when the bus they were travelling in collided with a train.

Hlengwa visited the accident scene today, accompanied by officials from the RTMC and the Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport.

The Deputy Minister says they remain concerned about road safety in the country generally and with scholar transport specifically.

He says they are considering reviewing a policy on scholar transport to ensure that there is cooperation between the Department of Transport and the Basic Education department, through a national interdepartmental committee.
