‘Boozed-up’ Northern Cape cop arrested for drinking and driving

The Mothibistad Magistrate’s Court in the Northern Cape has charged a police officer with drunken driving.

The constable, who was allegedly on duty while under the influence of alcohol, was arrested by his colleagues in Mothibistad over the weekend.

He was taken into custody after a video clip made rounds on social media.

The constable appeared in court on Monday and was also charged with negligent and reckless driving and utilising a state vehicle without the owner’s consent.

Provincial Police Commissioner Koliswa Otola said on Tuesday that internal departmental processes are underway.

“Police officers are meant to lead by example. We do not expect the behaviour that has been depicted in a video from any of our members.

“We will ensure a thorough internal process is conducted into the behaviour of this police officer. We do not condone and will not allow such behaviour in our ranks.”

The constable is currently out on bail.
