North West police have arrested four people in connection
with a mass shooting at a tavern in Kanana, Orkney, on Saturday morning.

The suspects were arrested in Orkney and Klerksdorp on
Monday.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said the
four would appear in court on Tuesday on multiple charges, including eight
counts of murder.

Eight people were killed in the attack.

Mokgwabone said a joint operation comprising detectives, Crime
Intelligence, and Tactical Response Teams, as well as organised crime and
anti-gang units arrested the men, aged between 24 and 38, in Klerksdorp and
Kanana Township.

During the arrests, the team seized a Toyota Hilux double
cab bakkie and more than 82 rounds of ammunition of different calibres.

The men are expected to appear in the Orkney Magistrate’s
Court on Tuesday facing eight counts of murder, 13 of attempted murder and
unlawful possession of ammunition.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Sello
Kwena commended the police for their “dedication and relentless efforts in
ensuring the arrest of suspects within a short space of time after the ruthless
incidents were reported”.

He cautioned lawlessness would not be tolerated.
