Sergeant shoots and kills female police officer, turns gun on himself

The shooting incident took place at Southern Gateway in Westenburg outside Polokwane on Sunday. 

Limpopo Police spokesperson Hlulani Mashaba says the police sergeant went to the former police officer’s residence, where an altercation ensued. 

“He then opened fire on him (the former police officer) and rushed back to the female senior officer, who tried to escape using her car.

“Unfortunately, the suspect fired several shots at her, resulting in her succumbing to the gunshot wounds. 

“The raging Police Sergeant managed to get inside the senior officer’s car and turned the gun on himself,” says Mashaba.

The police sergeant was attached to the provincial Crime Intelligence Unit and the provincial registrar.

He was certified dead on the scene, while the retired officer was rushed to hospital. 

Mashaba says the motive for the incident is not yet known. 

Meanwhile, Limpopo Provincial Commissioner of Police, lieutenant-general Thembi Hadebe, has urged the public to refrain from speculating about the details of the incident and wait for the facts to be established.
