The Pinnacle Point Site Complex in Mossel Bay has been declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Economic Social and Cultural Council (UNESCO).
The announcement was made on Friday during the 46th session of the UNESCO World Heritage convention taking place in New Delhi, India.
The archaeological sites at Mossel Bay’s Pinnacle Point, which have revealed some of the earliest evidence for modern human behaviour, was declared a Provincial Heritage Site in 2013.
This increases the number of World Heritage Sites in South Africa to 11.
The committee will still deliberate on other nominated sites until the 31st of July.
