Gauteng education spokesperson Steve Mabona has issued a stern warning to the public, especially Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres, about a man posing as a parent in search of placement for two children and has been implicated in a series of robberies targeting ECD staff.

Mabona revealed in a statement that the suspect has been moving from one ECD centre to another, primarily in the Daveyton area of Ekurhuleni and parts of Sedibeng.

Mabona said:

He is said to drive a red Toyota Etios with the registration number FZ19LV GP.

The spokesperson has urged all ECD centres and the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies immediately.

A resident from Sedibeng who runs an ECD centre and could not be named for fear of victimisation said that she has been a victim of the man who allegedly stole a cellphone from the centre.

She said the man came to the centre in the morning as the children were arriving and pretended to enquire about placement.

She added that he then took a cellphone and went to another ECD centre, where he took the cellphones of the teachers and the cook.

A woman said:

I feel sorry for the children that he is with because at the end, he might get caught and we also do not know whose children they are.

According to her, four ECD centres were struck by the man on Wednesday and she has alerted different ECD centres as he might strike in different areas.

“In some areas, it is alleged that this man uses guns to take the mobile phones so people need to be careful as well,” said the woman.
