DA set to retain Western Cape dominance as Cape Town heads toward outright majority

But while the party remains the province’s dominant political force, attention is now turning to 16 hung councils, where no single party will govern alone.

Municipalities including Knysna, Breede Valley, Oudtshoorn, Theewaterskloof and Witzenberg are shaping up as coalition battlegrounds, with negotiations likely to begin once results are formally declared on Sunday.

Western Cape provincial electoral officer for the IEC, Michael Hendrickse, said the only remaining municipality still to be counted is the City of Cape Town.

Hendrickse said there are about 70 voting slips still to be tallied in Cape Town, but results will be reflected on the IEC’s website as the numbers come in.
