Protests disrupt traffic along N2 in Eastern Cape

Protest action and road blockades have been reported along the N2 in Mt Ayliff, Mt Frere, Qumbu and Port St Johns in the Eastern Cape, with motorists advised to exercise caution when travelling through the affected areas or to use alternative routes where possible.

Reports indicate that truck drivers have used loads of sand to block sections of the N2 in protest against freight operations.

The Umzimvubu local municipality has advised motorists and road users to be careful when travelling along the N2 as they travel towards KwaBhaca town from EmaXesibeni due to the road blockades.

It said law enforcement officers are working to clear the roads and restore order.

“Currently, the entrance to KwaBhaca town from the Qumbu side has been reopened. The municipality calls on all residents, motorists and road users to remain calm, exercise patience and co-operate with law enforcement officers as they monitor the situation and ensure the safety of all road users,” it said.

The municipality has urged motorists to be vigilant and follow instructions from law enforcement officers.
