An agreement to resume learner transport services on Wednesday in the Western Cape has been welcomed, following disruptions that left thousands of pupils stranded at the start of the final school term.
The South African National Small Bus Operators Council in the province has reached consensus following talks with Education MEC Jaco Londt.
Operators suspended services on Tuesday, citing mounting financial pressure, particularly the rising cost of diesel.
The action followed an emergency meeting last week Thursday, where operators gave the department until Monday to provide what they described as a meaningful response to their financial concerns.
DA Western Cape education spokesperson Peter Johnson said “Learner transport is essential to ensuring that thousands of Western Cape learners can get to school safely and reliably. We recognise the pressures facing operators, but discussions must remain focused on practical solutions that protect learners and ensures sustainable, and reliable transport.”Â
