Western Cape government deeply concerned about flare up of taxi violence in Cape Town

The Western Cape Mobility department said that its deeply concerned about a flare up of taxi-related violence in Cape Town.

In the most recent incident, police confirm a 21-year-old man was shot dead on the corner of Dumani and Waxbury Street in Dunoon on Saturday night.

The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) in the Western Cape confirmed the deceased is a taxi owner but the motive for the attack is yet to be determined.

According to reports the taxi owner was approached by an unknown suspect who shot him before fleeing the scene.

Four men were fatally shot and two others were wounded in taxi-related violence in two separate shootings in Cape Town last week.

Department Spokesperson Muneera Allie said, “We are deeply concerned about the recent incidents and the broader safety of our communities and public transport routes.” 

Allie said that the priority is public safety and the department is engaging with stakeholders on measures to restore stability.
