Longtime bowlers earn their bragging rights in Northern Cape Bowls competitions

The Northern Cape Bowls (NCB) veterans and U30 masters took centre stage with some of the province’s finest bowlers going head-to-head in Vryburg and Kimberley this past weekend of 15 August.

The men’s and women’s veterans masters were hosted in Vryburg, where the top 12 players in each category were invited to compete for honours.

In the men’s veterans masters, it was Johan van Straaten who emerged victorious after an entertaining final against his clubmate, Wimpie du Toit. Both players enjoyed outstanding weekends, topping their respective sections to book their places in the final.

Although Du Toit stumbled at the final hurdle, he can be extremely proud of his performance throughout the tournament. Wilhelm Malan secured third place after defeating Stephan Enslin in the third-place play-off.

In the women’s veterans masters, seasoned campaigner Laura Fouché produced an excellent performance to claim the title after overcoming Louise Oosthuizen in the final.

Trix Basson secured third place, defeating Lorraine Kriel in the third-place play-off.

Meanwhile, back in Kimberley, the NCB U30 masters was contested at the Sol Plaatje West End Bowling Club. The prestigious tournament features the top 12 NCB players who are still under the age of 30, providing an excellent platform for the province’s young talent to showcase their skills.

Excellent bowls were on display, with several of the younger players putting their hands up for future honours within the NCB.

After the final bowl had been delivered, the results were:

■ first: Driaan van Niekerk;

■ second: Raymond Hardiman;

■ third: Diann Cilliers; and

■ fourth: Kenneth Penderis.
