Almost half a million applications for admission into Grade 1 and Grade 8 have been recorded.
The Gauteng Department of Education’s online application system opened last Wednesday for the 2027 academic year.

The department said that the system has been improved to ensure parents and guardians have a smoother application process.
Speaking at a media briefing in Johannesburg, Education MEC Lebogang Maile urged parents not to wait until the last minute to apply.
“Learners awaiting specialised placement must also receive interim support rather than simply remain on a waiting list. This output-driven approach changes the question from how many applications have been received to how many learners have been successfully placed, how many remain outstanding, why they remain outstanding, and what intervention is being applied to each unresolved category.”
