Limpopo throws Makhadzi a homecoming party

South African singer Makhadzi was treated to a special homecoming breakfast by the premier of Limpopo Premier, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, at the Meropa Hotel in Polokwane.

This breakfast celebrated the singer’s recent win at the Black Entertainment Television (BET) Award for Best International Act.

Makhadzi – real name Ndivhudzannyi Ralivhona – was warmly welcomed by the executive mayor of Polokwane, John Mpe.

He said the city believed in honouring people while they were still alive and announced that Makhadzi would have a one-woman show on 21 December at the  Peter Mokaba Stadium.

At the breakfast, Makhadzi shared how she used to crash parties in her village to dance for people.

“I won my first cellphone, which I gave to my grandmother, by being the best dancer at a promotional event,” she said.

“I always say that I’m a miracle child. If you don’t believe in miracles, just look at my life.”

Premier Ramathuba called Makhadzi the “Brenda Fassie” of our time.

“You are indeed number one, as your new hit song says. We will keep supporting talent as the government of Limpopo. Now, the whole world knows about our province through your music,” she said.

After breakfast, Makhadzi paraded through the streets of Polokwane, showing off her BET Award to the locals.

On Tuesday, after her award win, the national sports, arts and culture department (DSAC) responded to questions about why it is not financially supporting Makhadzi.

“DSAC strongly rejects the idea that it has not supported Makhadzi over the past 14 months. Makhadzi has been booked by DSAC to perform at several national events, earning as much as R230,000,” the department said.
