An investigation is underway following reports of dead and dying sardines at several locations along the Western Cape coast from Saldanha Bay to Gansbaai.
The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment said it has received photos, videos and reports from fishers and members of the public.
According to the department, fish have been reported washing ashore, while dead and dying sardines have also been observed drifting at the surface as far as eight nautical miles offshore near Hout Bay.
The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment said fish samples were collected off Saldanha Bay on Saturday, and examination and diagnostic testing would begin on Monday.
Scientific observers have also been deployed to collect further information.
The department has confirmed the presence of a harmful algal bloom in the Saldanha Bay area, but said at this stage, it can’t be assumed that it’s responsible for all the reported mortalities, given the wide geographic extent.
Officials are urging the public to refrain from collecting, handling or consuming dead or dying fish found on beaches or floating at sea.
