Gauteng escalates traffic light repairs with anti-vandalism upgrades

The Gauteng Department of Transport intensified efforts to repair and restore traffic signal intersections across the province, with active work already underway along several major routes in Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni.

To prevent recurring breakdowns, the department stated that the restoration programme incorporates significantly stronger security measures designed specifically to combat cable theft and deliberate vandalism.

Department Spokesperson Lesiba Mpya appealed to motorists and local communities to report vandalism and suspicious activity immediately, warning that damage to road infrastructure severely disrupts traffic flow and compromises public safety.

“Work to rebuild vandalised intersections will include added safety features and secure components such as strengthened controller boxes, underground chambers, secure bollards around poles as well as CCTV cameras with built-in intelligent analytics,” Mpya said.

“These works are seen as critical in the restoration programme to improve safety and facilitate mobility in critical intersections in and around Gauteng.”
