A 32-year-old man is expected to appear in the Somerset West Magistrate’s Court soon after the vehicle he was travelling in was linked to several house robberies, including rape.
Police said the robbery cases, including the rape, took place in areas such as Bothasig, Table View, Stellenbosch, and Kleinmond.
The Western Cape police spokesperson, Thembakazi Mpendukana, said a crime-combating operation was conducted by members of the Somerset West Crime Prevention Unit that led to the discovery of the vehicle.
“The police spotted a grey Honda BRV that was linked with the above-mentioned cases on the N2 Road on Wednesday, July 8, at about 5.45am. An attempt to stop the vehicle was made, but the suspect drove at high speed in the direction of Cape Town using the N2,” Mpendukana said.
During the chase, officers saw the suspect throwing bags out of the vehicle’s windows as he continued to speed down the highway.
“The bags were then found filled with a firearm that is used during robberies and technology equipment, which was reported to have been stolen the night before in Betty’s Bay, Kleinmond,” Mpendukana said.
After a lengthy car chase, the suspect was apprehended.
“Subsequently, after a very lengthy pursuit, a 32-year-old male suspect who is a foreign national was caught and apprehended for possession of a prohibited firearm, possession of stolen property, contravening the Immigration Act, and reckless and negligent driving,” Mpendukana said.
The vehicle was seized and booked in as an exhibit.
