Free State MEC for Social Development Mathabo Hlalele led a call for stronger male mentorship and responsible fatherhood at a Boys and Men Dialogue held in Welcome today (7/7).
The dialogue was held at Kingdom Ministries Church under the theme “Illuminating the Path: A Boys’ Rite of Passage to Respectful Manhood,” aimed at encouraging men to become active mentors and role models for the next generation.
The initiative aims to provide a safe platform where boys can be guided through their transition to adulthood, while men are given the opportunity to share values, life lessons and experiences that promote responsibility, respect and integrity.
A key focus of the program is strengthening accountability among fathers, uncles, mentors and community leaders, especially in supporting boys who lack positive male role models. Hlalele said consistent guidance from responsible men can help shape confident young people who make positive contributions to their families and communities.
“A symbolic candle lighting ceremony will be part of the programme, where men will light candles for the boys as a demonstration of their commitment to guide, inspire and support them on their journey to become responsible and respectful men,” she said.
The dialogue also seeks to ensure that each participant goes home with a renewed sense of connection, purpose and confidence, knowing they have the support of caring adults who have invested in their future.
Hlalele will engage directly with boys and men later in the program to discuss the challenges they face and explore practical ways to strengthen families, communities and positive masculinities in the Free State.
