Twelve children were killed in a private scholar transport mini-bus accident in the Kokosi-Wedela area in the Merafong Local Municipality, Gauteng, on Wednesday.

The driver, together with 11 pupils from Rockland Primary School and one pupil from Laerskool Blyvooruitsig, were killed in the crash. Seven other pupils required hospitalisation.

“It is alleged that the learner transport [vehicle] was hit from behind by a bakkie, causing it to overturn and subsequently catch fire. This horrific accident is alleged to have occurred around 06:45,” said Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Matome Chiloane.

“Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident,” Chiloane added.
